What's in a name?

Sweet Funk, comes from the origin of the word dulcimer; “dulci” from the Latin word for “sweet,” and “funk” from the fact that they enjoy playing music that is a little funky and not traditionally played on the mountain dulcimer.

HOW SWEET IT IS!
Mountain Dulcimer and Guitar Duo Sweet Funk is an instrumental mountain dulcimer and guitar duo whose music is a blend of contemporary and traditional favorites as well as some original tunes. Their unique arrangements explore the contemporary side of the mountain dulcimer, which is usually considered a traditional instrument. Their music includes everything from Beatles to jazz, traditional to show tunes.

Sweet Funk has been performing as a duo since 1997. They discovered the mountain dulcimer at an Appalachian festival and have been hooked ever since! Their musical background and training goes back a ways. Hank has played guitar for a number of years and Dana played classical piano beginning as a child and on into adulthood. They both have always enjoyed a wide variety of music and now try to include that same variety in their performances.

They both enjoy teaching music and often teach workshops at dulcimer festivals as well as teaching and arranging music for the mountain dulcimer club of which they are members. Dana also gives private dulcimer lessons as time allows. They enjoy performing in any venue from large concert halls and festivals to small intimate settings such as coffeehouses, private parties and house concerts.

Sweet Funk has three CD’s available. Their first CD, Sweet!, is a collection of contemporary favorites including Georgia On My Mind, Bye Bye Blues, Something by George Harrison (Beatles), as well as several original tunes. Their Christmas CD includes many of the holiday standards such as Let It Snow and I’ll Be Home for Christmas. Their most recent CD and tablature book is entitled Deja New.  It is a collection of some of their unique arrangements of traditional tunes.

“... they have become extremely popular because of their choice of newer contemporary songs played on the Mountain Dulcimer and guitar. You may even hear a Beatle tune! We are fortunate to have them here this year instructing and performing.”
